Being Cool with M&M

The commercial ad from M&M attracts audience by using the joke that matches the culture. The audience will easily get the point why their chocolate is “not average” but actually wild and sexual. By giving the narrator from the girl M&M talking something serious and made the claim that their not naked, with the contrast of another M&M jumped in and took off its shell to dance. The humor combining with American culture shows that the M&M chocolate is someting really cool.

  1. This commercial uses humor to appeal to a wide audience because a person of any age likes something funny. In the commercial the guy with the red dress shirt thinks the brown M&M is naked, which is a coincidence when the red M&M shows up and thinks that the brown M&M is also naked. At the end of the commercial the phrase "not your average chocolate" appears and it relates to the red M&M because an average person wouldn't just walk into a room and do what the red M&M does.

  2. The only effective appeal in this commercial was its humor and use of modern songs everyone loves. At the end of the commercial I had gained no knowledge of M&M's, I was just hysterically laughing because I thought the commercial was so funny. The humor, dancing, music, and story line lures the audience in and makes them laugh and at the end of the commercial they just remember that it was about M&M's and that it was funny. In our society today, humor is found in somewhat sexual jokes which is a hint at how our society has evolved over time because 50 years ago any kind of advertisement about nudity would not have been accepted.

  3. I agree with Holly the only thing that really stands out in this chemmercial is the humor and the choice in song. I don't exactly no what M&M really wanted the viewer to gain out of this, maybe including the modern song, a party, and the candy just represents that M&M's cause for a good time at a party; just a good party snack. It also made me wonder why M&M actually has a brown M&M as its hard colored shell, when underneath the hard shell lies a brown chocolate layer. Just leaving the M&M brown and printing the m on the front represents laziness, which describes America's soceity today.

  4. This commercial would probably only really appeal to a 40 and under crowd. Anyone much older than that probably would not get the reference to the song in the background, nor care for its lyrics either way. It is comical in that the women have all of thier attention diverted to a talking piece of sophisticated candy and the men can do nothing but take this sophisticated piece of candy as a joke. Maybe this is a reference as to how sexism plays a huge role in our culture? Also after the other M&M comes in later and rips his shell off it shows that M&ms are classy and fun enough for any sort of party or together and that they always fit in and are the life of the party.

  5. the commercial is only appealing to the younger generation that listen to music and like more vulgar jokes. My grandma would not like this commercial. One interesting thing is the way men are portrayed. The brown M&M represents the female and the guy thinks that she is naked and he starts laughing. This represents how young guys are immature and the girl M&M can see this. Also, going off of what Marissa said, this is also a crack at society and how lazy americans are. There were no new ideas for M&M's, so they decided to just not color one. A true sign on laziness.....or genius?

  6. This ad uses humor story and cool music to attract audiences. I am not actually quiet understand what the ad wants to show about M&M through this ad, but It definitely give a deep impression to audiences with its funny story and the music. It seems like through this ad, M&M wants to show its products as a very good kind of party food, or good food when having fun. It want to advertise by entertaining audiences, and creat a relation between fun and M&M.

  7. This ad uses humor with a hint of pop culture to appeal to a wide range of audiences. By using a bar scene, the ad appeals to the adult audience, where the humor and music appeal to the younger viewers. The video implies that by eating M&M's, the viewers life will become fun and entertaining, similarly to being in a bar. Something else to think about, is where the M&M's are standing: in a bar. The producer may include this scene to show that at no matter what "party" situation one may be in, M&M's are a great snack food to have around. The video may also have a negative appeal that the producer may have not expected to be portrayed by the male M&M exemplifies. It implies the fact that eating M&M's can cause people to party too hard, and rip their clothes off, whether the situation permits it or not.

  8. I definitely agree that this ad comes off as a bit sexist and that it also implies that M&Ms are compatible with a good time. I found the statement "not your average chocolate" to be very interesting. It certainly wasn't your average chocolate commercial, instead of showing the chocolate being carefully crafted and then enjoyed by someone the commercial personifies the chocolates and puts them in a bar. Nothing is said about the chocolate other than it not being average. If someone watching is not familiar with M&Ms then that could be taken as a bad thing because the ad didn't say anything positive about M&Ms so they wouldn't know if they were below or above average. But since the majority of the audience watching this ad would be familiar with M&Ms an ethos appeal is being made to remind the viewer that M&Ms are a delicious snack for every occasion.

  9. This commercial attempts to appeal to the audience by associating having a good time with their product, M&M's. By having their commercial set in a party environment, the audience is able to get a positive vibe from their product. The M&M company also attempts to make their commercial memorable to the audience by having a very currently popular song playing in it. Overall, this commercial attempts to appeal to a mainstream type of audience with it's use of music and setting.

  11. In this advertisement M&Ms trys to convey a message that their candy can be more than just a basic candy. The advertisers use humor and catchy new age music to grab the audiance and pull their attention. By relating the candy to a person the cady is brought into the ad as more than a simple object but a personality. Overall the ad does a good job of using young humor and sex apeal to interest the viewer in the product.

  12. The M&M commercial attempts to appeal to its audience by using humor. The ad is very effective because it uses humor to make the audience associate M&Ms with a good time without giving the audience any actual reasons for this association. The intended audience for the ad is anyone in college or below, this is apparent because of the music, "Im sexy and I know it", that plays in the commercial. This type of music appeals to that age group.

  13. The M&M brand was aiming mainly for humor from this ad. They tried to introduce their "new" M&M color in a big way by having it appear to be naked at a party and have the red M&M follow along. The up to date music and party scene are an attempt to grab the attention of the younger audience (college students and younger) to buy this product and associate it with a fun, positive image.

  14. The statement about the "not your average chocolate" was very interesting. Most of the time people write chocolate commercials to appeal to those who enjoy fine chocolates. They describe an intricate and supposedly unique way of making the chocolate carefully. M & Ms are certainly not this type of chocolate, as it is very apparent that they are not made to appeal to the average chocolate lover. They instead, appeal to the average partying crowd of college students, or the people who would normally buy M & Ms. This method is extremely effective, because they design the commercial to directly appeal to their target audience by being "cool" and disregarding the average "fancy" chocolate commercial. There are obvious vulgarities that could turn off other groups of people though, such as mothers and fathers of young parents, who would probably not want their kids seeing the commercial, but generally, the commercial comes off as fun and comedic, so it serves its purpose.

  15. The tagline "not your average chocolate" is applied through the use of two different personalities. The woman is very sophisticated and mature, which the male is the life of the party. This commercial also seems as if it could be sexist because the women are being very mature and the men are being immature.

  16. As most people have pointed out that the commercial uses humor to attract audiences. However, the commercial's biggest potential target is young people, or more specific, cool young people. The commercial set an environment of a fancy party to show audiences the M&M is cool. Also, I agree with Kelsey, the commercial can be sexist. Both real men and male M&M seem silly. They are very immature about being naked. But women and female M&M are being cool about it.

  17. What i found most interesting about this commercial is how the guys thought the milk chocolate m&m was naked. At first the guy in the red was laughing because he thought she was naked. Then the other m&m showed up and took off his shell because he thought she was naked. What is significant is that this commercial is being sexist and pretty much saying guys have their heads up the gutters and that women think their fools. When the m&m said anyone that thinks I'm naked is a fool its a terence to the guys because only guys thought she was naked. The producers use sexist humor to appeal to the audience.

  18. I agree with everyone's previous statement that the advertisement uses humor to capture the audience's attention. In thinking that the brown M&M was naked, the red M&M then jumps to the conclusion that the brown M&M is naked, and takes his shell off. This could relate to how when a viewer sees a chocolate commercial, they jump to the conclusion that it's just like every other chocolate out there. The advertisement then takes that idea, and expresses at the end that it's "not your average chocolate".

  19. As most everyone has pointed out, this commercial uses humor to appeal to its audience and reel them into their product. It is definitely aimed at a younger generation, considering the song choice. I doubt a 65 year old is going to start singing along to "I'm sexy and I Know It." But as a few other students have pointed out, I think that the way M&M went about this advertisement was bold. Most chocolate commercials play slow moving music while giving a detailed explanation about how the chocolate was made. M&M on the other hand, shows it's chocolate in a bar, having a good time, singing and dancing. Then at the end, "not your average chocolate," shoots across the screen. This is a great way for the company to distinguish itself while appealing to customers.

  20. This is an effective advertisement for M&Ms. Everyone has pointed out how it uses a popular song and attractive setting to place its product. It really is a hilarious commercial too. It plays off the simple observation that while other m&ms have a colorful candy shell, the brown ones are the same as their chocolate inside, which, at first glance, can seem a bit naked. You would think another m&m would be used to seeing brown m&ms, considering they live in the same bag, but he too mistakes her for being naked. Luckily for him, m&ms are a fun-loving snack and he can cut loose to make this commercial funny. This advertisement does what good ads do. Grabs your attention and places its product. Makes me kinda want to dance... and have some chocolate...
